“"Tattoo (How 'Bout You)" is a special song to us. It's catchy, but it's also about wanting to protect your heart and not get too attached to someone if they're not fully into it.”
― Conor Smith in the BWWMusic interview, February 16, 2018[1]

"Tattoo (How 'Bout You)" (also referred to as "Tattoo"), is the sophomore single recorded by In Real Life, released through Hollywood Records on February 2, 2018. It is their first single where Conor Michael Smith writes his own rap verse.[2][3] "Tattoo" reached #29 on the Billboard pop charts, and was streamed more than a million times on Spotify. It serves as the tenth track from their debut studio album, She Do.

Background

The band made their official announcement on January 25, 2018, over their social media. On June 22, 2018, its acoustic version was released.

In Real Life performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live![4] and in many of their performances. It was featured on A-List: Pop Videos for Apple Music, their single "Tonight Belongs to You" being the second time. For the celebration of their song, In Real Life had a release party, performing at Lucky Strike. In an interview, they gave fans tattoos in honor of the song.[5]

Background

The accompanying music video was uploaded to YouTube on February 14, 2018, directed by Nicholas Lam. The song is about relationships, a tattoo symbolizing permanence. They want to stay with the girl and make it work, despite her secretly cheating on all of them.[7][8] In the end, the main message [in the video] depicts that they don't need to chase after the same girl when it just causes heartache.

The location was filmed in downtown Los Angeles, and was one of the first videos In Real Life got to work on together in the band, having the ability to work with the directors.[9][10] In a Zach Sang Show interview, the band recalled their concern over how the music video originally looked, saying the directors wanted a scene at the end where they surround the girl under a bridge.[11]

Lyrics

Chance Perez
Called you up last time I thought I'd be your shelter
You left me standing at your door
Kept you off my mind last weekend but it felt worse
Now I'm back outside once more

Drew Ramos
'Cause I like the rhythms you play
Melodies makin' me sway
Wantin' some more
We were the talk of the day
Should've been up on the stage, not on the floor
Something just pulled you away
Happened in front of my face
What's all this for?
I'm still feeling the same

All
How bout you?
You
'Cause I miss the stupid things that we do-o
How 'bout you?
You
'Cause I'd hate to have to change this tattoo too
Yeah I like the rhythms you play
Melodies makin' me sway
Wantin' some more
We were the talk of the day
Should've been up on the stage
How 'bout you?
You
'Cause I miss the stupid things that we do-o

Brady Tutton
Always seems to have some questions for your answers
How could you act so carelessly?
Your reasons don't add up, you're such a little actor
See I give you all my thoughts for free

Drew Ramos
'Cause I like the rhythms you play
Melodies makin' me sway
Wantin' some more
We were the talk of the day
Should've been up on the stage, not on the floor
Something just pulled you away
Happened in front of my face

Michael Conor
Uh, cutting all my distractions
No tasks 'cause baby I don't want no attachments
Maybe this is perfect and I'm overreacting
But maybe I'm just missing something I haven't had yet
How 'bout you?
You really think that we could work together
But if it don't last you gonna hurt forever
You say maybe we should give it a chance
Cancel our plans and really hope that you understand, it's like
