Broke Hero Records was an independent record label set up by In Real Life, where they would release their new music. Their first song released through the label was "California Christmas". They mentioned the label with the magazine, A Book of.[1]

Their intention was to "produce a lot of great music that's going to be written and produced by [them], with the help of whoever [they] work with." Smith concluded, "Us five as a collective are all incredible musicians and I think it's time the world sees that."[2] Smith told radio station, 102.7 KIISFM, "We're not doing this for money, we're not doing to be popular, we're not doing this for fame [...] It's like superheroes without the money."[3]
